I don't know how else to put it. A recent poll shows that Tories would double-to-triple their seat count in Quebec, and the Liberals would be reduced to about 10 seats there.
Wow.
Hey Cherniak, this is what happens to your party when you spend all your time thinking up faux scandals. It's become the only thing you're good at. Even with all the bad press you've managed to dish at the Conservatives, and gain some momentum, it didn't last. As soon as people started forgetting about the Cadman affair, the Conservatives have surged in the polls.
Dion is screwed. The Liberal Party is screwed.
To lift some quotes from John Lapierre, former Liberal cabinet minister, who was on CTV this afternoon:
"The Bloc has never been in such a bad position. The Bloc has lost 12 points since the last election."
[...]
"The Conservative Party is now the federalist alternative in Quebec. Outside of Montreal, if you're a federalist, you tend to vote Tory."
[...]
"The Liberals, they are in a worse position than they were in the middle of the sponsorship scandal. It's never been that bad, that I remember, in the last 30 years, at least"

I love when CTV has John Lapierre on. I hope he is on today's Question Period, I have not watched it yet. I think of Lapierre as a bomb-thrower (lite) who is acceptable to Canadian MSM. Whenever he is on, he always says something 'indiscreet' about the Libs and stirs up their fury I am sure.
I was watching Duffy Live the other day and some guest(don't remember his name or firm he worked for) made an interesting comment. He said that many Quebecers now prefer to have an Anglo from the Rest of Canada as PM because the Quebecers could get a better idea of where the RofC stood on issues. He said that when Premier and Prime Minister are both Franco they don't believe they are getting a good idea of what's happening elsewhere in the country.
I too agree that the fat lady is warming up. When I saw Dion demanding respect the other day I knew then it's all over for him. There is some piece today in Tor Star saying Dion could be the next Mackenzie King because they both had troubles early in their leadership. I would be amazed if Dion wins one election never mind match King in longevity.
I think its worse than polls make out for Libs. It is one thing to say you will vote Lib next election when someone phone's you but it's quite another to make effort to vote, volunteer or donate money when you party is lead by a clown who nobody respects. Personally, I think the Libs are looking at election results that will be similar to what happened to PC in '93. Maybe not as bad a seat total but it will banish the Libs to oppo for at least 2 more elections while they try to figure out what they stand for now that most of their ideas have already been implemented.
So how is the 20% support from this poll any different than the 20% support the Liberals received in the `06 election? And why would a mere 3 seat reduction in Quebec screw the Liberals?
You used to be able to think for yourself. What happened to you during your hiatus, Mike?
Wow McClelland actually made a point! Followed by another insult hurled at the host and of course another link back to his blog. At least this time he is putting some effort to earn that link.
The 20% is an average across Quebec. Outside of Montreal, Libs will win NO seats, they are tied with the NDP at 15% (teehee)
Normally I would mop the floor with McClelland here but... wiser souls have to admit that it is people like Robert and his fearless leader that WILL produce a conservative majority. Bring it on!
